Guo’s Villa | 郭庄
Guo’s Villa is one of those places you wish were a secret. On a slightly off-colour day, the weather I mean, there are few people there and sitting right on the bank of West Lake drinking green tea with a book or friend is one of those unique-to-Hangzhou ways of whiling away an afternoon. Whoever [...]

Pool in Hangzhou
There is something to be said for those street side crappy pool tables you occasionally see outside a small shop on the edge of Hangzhou. The beer is cheap, the tables are nearly free, and the worn out rubber, cracked slate (warped wood) and disfigured balls (gulp) means that seriously handicapped pool players like myself can compete a little with the pros. A little.

Shangri-la Garden Bar
The Shangri-la Garden Bar probably isnt going to be a destination for the evening unless you are staying in the Shang, or tucked into dinner at one of their restaurants, Peppino’s or the Coffee Garden, but if you are ever after a quiet good cocktail with a bit of live background jazz, you cant go [...]

IFE Cafe
IFE – anybody know if that is a name, or initials of something else? – is a local daytime hangout aimed firmly at the foreign students living and working at Yuquan Campus of Zhejiang Uni.. The place is tiny, self service, cosily decorated and has pretty good coffee, both to drink and beans to buy. [...]

A Bellevue
Hangzhou is decidedly short of a cocktail. There are supposed to be nearly 2 million people living within the main city area, which means there is one decent cocktail bar per million people. Can you imagine only 6 places in London to get a cocktail?? Or 15 in New York? They’d be busy. And when [...]

Starbucks
Of course Starbucks is in Hangzhou, where is it not? This isnt a ground-breaking review about coffee, just a map of all the Starbucks I can think of.

Amigos Bar
Tony Ying has been running bars since he left school and all have had a unique buzz and friendliness. The first time I met him was in what we all called The Tent Bar, half way up Yuhuangshan Road, and named after the huge octagonal marquee he had outside. That place was all wood fires, [...]

Lei Lei Dumpling | 蕾蕾水饺
Lei Lei makes the best dumplings in the world. It’s not open to discussion. And she knows it. The place is full, too busy for delivery, extra cash for hot sauce and paper napkins cost 1Y a pack. But go anyway. My favourite is the 贵妃肉 (guifeirou – Dont know what’s in it). For me, [...]

Maya Bar
Maya Bar has become an institution for the expat crowd living in Hangzhou. The small unassuming place fills up quickly after 9pm pretty much any night of the week drawing people who want to have a couple, or more, well poured drinks and properly served Tiger beer. By midnight, the bar is often in full swing with many looking like they are going to be settling in for a night…
