  • Angelos – A Slice of New York in Hangzhou

The Chateaubriand was 20 centimeters long, the whole tail end of a filet of beef. Slightly blackened on the outside, this gargantuan piece of beef cleaved open, almost poetically, to show the soft juicy pink centre…

  • Paninis!

The Segafredo coffee, double thick double espresso was so strong the backs of my eyes watered and my nose tingled.

  • Eudora Station

Chatting about Eudora Station, the restaurant’s owner wanted to know if it was a good thing that many were saying that Eudora is the “new Paradise Rock”. I am sure nobody much likes to be compared with somebody or something else, especially when you don’t know the other, but I told Thomas that it was probably a good thing.

  • Shangri-la Garden Bar

The Shangri-la Garden Bar probably isnt going to be a destination for the evening unless you are staying in the Shang, or tucked into dinner at one of their restaurants, Peppino’s or the Coffee Garden, but if you are ever after a quiet good cocktail with a bit of live background jazz, you cant go [...]

  • Gigantic Pizza – Buona

But that 50 cm pizza – yup fifty centimeter pizza – was made with whole wheat dough and was not adulterated with all those healthy things like vegetables. Ours came with pepperoni and parma ham. The 2 of us ate the whole thing. It was pretty bloody good. And the espresso, thick strong.

  • Va Bene

Va Bene on Hangzhou West Lake (西湖天地) is one of those Italian evenings you creep off to for a little spoiling. Good food, fast discrete service in a comfortable restaurant.

  • Snack at Shanghai South

If you don’t have an hour to kill at Shanghai South, you would probably never get to find Bricco. Once you know where it is, killing 30 minutes becomes almost a pleasure. Bricco is a deli, almost. Not quite what you find on Sloane Street, but nevertheless, cold beer, pizza slices, tasty sandwiches with good [...]

  • Me Too Cafe | 蜜桃咖啡

From the West Side of Hangzhou Me Too Cafe 蜜桃咖啡 is a bit of a slog, so why not make an afternoon of it – wasnt as if I had never been there, so I knew it would be easier enough to do. And in any case, the cafe is a part of a factory re-design aka Docklands or something in London. There is literally loads of space with high ceilings, design companies, designer home-fittings shops and more open each month. That by itself is worth the effort.

  • IFE Cafe

IFE – anybody know if that is a name, or initials of something else? – is a local daytime hangout aimed firmly at the foreign students living and working at Yuquan Campus of Zhejiang Uni.. The place is tiny, self service, cosily decorated and has pretty good coffee, both to drink and beans to buy. [...]

  • Costa Coffee

When you walk into either of them it’s kinda hard to put your finger on the major differences between Costa and Starbucks. Costa is from England, Starbucks from America, ok. Starbucks is of course the bigger player here in Hangzhou, although Costa does well in England. After that, well… Inside they are very familiar, almost [...]
