Hangzhou Foundations…
I hope these buildings on Wenyi West Road (and Guicui Road) have good foundations – they are are awfully narrow. Nine held in connection to collapsed Shanghai apartment building Yesterday’s front pages were largely devoted to a...

  • Maya Gav goes public with Sherpas

Gav, pictured here at Maya Bar, is local to Hangzhou and even more local to the Maya Bar. Well-known around town for his impromptu gigs and other impromptu-ness has gone national with his song Sherpas Feed Me. Funny song set to Britney’s Baby One More Time, it really does sound like Gav. • Fengdu Restaurant (枫都美食)

It would seem to be a serious omission that there isn’t a page on here about Fengdu Restaurant, as it is a veritable gem, nearly always open, great for after after-dinner-drinks dinner And it’s right next door to my favourite drinking establishment, Maya Bar. Whatever the name, Jamaica Cafe is good, and could be called just about anything. These guys really know about their coffee, or at least I think so, and [...]

  • Vineyard Cafe

This rather new addition to the bar and restaurant scene has about 10 different names, but Vineyard sounds best, so that’s what it’s going to be on this page. Vineyard is a favourite afternoon hang-out for this office-less wannabe writer. The internet is good, the Illy coffee is really good, and there is a range [...]

  • Provence French Restaurant

Hangzhou has very few independent western restaurants worth talking about, and Provence is one of them, probably the best of the lot. Tucked into a small well-liked leafy street near the stadium, the simple decoration stands out amongst the jumble of the rest of the street.
