Evangelist to preach to 20,000 in Hangzhou – Update

Over the 2 day period March 20/21, 14,000 people came to hear Evangelist Luis Palau and the Rev. James Meeks preach in Hangzhou Chong Yi Church. The aim had been 20,000, but the rain didn’t evaporate on the way down and dampened the spirits.

KLM does the decent thing

KLM will start direct flights between Amsterdam and Hangzhou from 8th May. These non stop flights between Amsterdam and Hangzhou with KLM are scheduled to depart Amsterdam on the flight number KL881 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays to reach Hangzhou the next day and KLM return flight number KL882 will take off from Hangzhou on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays to arrive in Amsterdam on the same day.

Now all I need to know is about flights from Amsterdam to Midlands, UK and I can skip both London and Shanghai… Wow.

Hangzhou Gets Weird Architecture

Architectural firm Stephen Holls has recently won the design competition to rebuild an old industrial site here in Hangzhou. This is properly space age looking stuff, although the design is supposed to be taken from a style of Chinese painting known as 山水 (Shanshui or Mountain Water Landscapes). The whole project will be about 25 hectares of construction on about 25 hectares, so it is huge. And will include flats and an exhibition centre. I am no architect so really dont want to make much more comment on this – but go read for yourself where this article came from:

Hangzhou – Bangkok Direct flights start again

Just a quick fyi. Hainan Airlines is this week starting a twice a week direct service to Bangkok, so for those of you who need a quick beach bar fix, you’re back in luck. The scheduled times are a bit awkward, but it certainly beats hanging out in Shenzhen for a day because the flight in from Hangzhou was 3 hours late. And for you tough ones, you could go straight from airport to office…

Evangelist to preach to 20,000 in Hangzhou

World famous Christian Evangelist Luis Palau is coming to Hangzhou to preach to 20,000, weather permitting. The Church, Chong Yi is only supposed to able to seat 5,400 (strange it isnt 8,888; I guess that represents pagan beliefs), but with that much love and goodwill in the air, rain will just sizzle and evaporate on the way down.

Palau is a proselytizing machine. During his last visit to Chong Yi Church, 10% of the 8,000 congregation converted on the spot, so for those of you who sit on the fence and need a good kicking, this is definitely going to be the event of the month.

Maya Gav goes public with Sherpas

Gav, pictured here at Maya Bar, is local to Hangzhou and even more local to the Maya Bar. Well-known around town for his impromptu gigs and other impromptu-ness has gone national with his song Sherpas Feed Me. Funny song set to Britney’s Baby One More Time, it really does sound like Gav. 13th November, Hangzhou Business Network (HBN) met in Vineyard Cafe last night for their second ‘brick and mortar’ meeting. Founded online with LinkedIn by Niall O’Reilly, this group has become successful with active online participation in discussions and postings of local news and business stories. Currently boasting 300 members, this resource for those living in Hangzhou is impressive. Last night 50 members and their guests turned up. An eclectic mix of professionals, writers, musicians, students, and a few layabouts like myself turned up to eat, drink, meet and ultimately listen do the live gig with Eddy Lewis and Hong Jingjing (洪菁菁).

Petty burglar sends SMS to victim for more cash – See original

A burglar in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, was arrested after he sent a text message to his victim demanding more money.
The 20-year-old accused, surnamed He, broke into a woman’s house a fortnight ago and could only find 300 yuan ($44) in cash.
Considering the haul too meager, He sent a text message to the woman three days later asking her to bring him more cash if she cared for her life.
The woman phoned the police, who advised her to agree to meet the suspect at a particular location, where he was nabbed.
