  • The Norway Woods Bar

I dont really see myself rushing off to Norway Woods of an evening, but should try some time. Charlie of G+ / Wahaha fame is running the place now, and so I am sure it is a pretty slick operation. But perhaps Norway Woods is just as suited for a cheeky afternoon, early evening drink.

  • Angelos – A Slice of New York in Hangzhou

The Chateaubriand was 20 centimeters long, the whole tail end of a filet of beef. Slightly blackened on the outside, this gargantuan piece of beef cleaved open, almost poetically, to show the soft juicy pink centre…

  • Eddy, Jingjing & Bong Trio

Eddy Lewis, Bong, Hong Jingjing are playing together again in Eudora Station, Hangzhou. It’ll be a big gig.

  • Pool in Hangzhou

There is something to be said for those street side crappy pool tables you occasionally see outside a small shop on the edge of Hangzhou. The beer is cheap, the tables are nearly free, and the worn out rubber, cracked slate (warped wood) and disfigured balls (gulp) means that seriously handicapped pool players like myself can compete a little with the pros. A little.

  • Eudora Station

Chatting about Eudora Station, the restaurant’s owner wanted to know if it was a good thing that many were saying that Eudora is the “new Paradise Rock”. I am sure nobody much likes to be compared with somebody or something else, especially when you don’t know the other, but I told Thomas that it was probably a good thing.

  • Joy Luck Club

Joy Luck is a simple pub with quite a few live gigs on, definitely more underground and alternative music. Long bar, big stage, some interesting murals on the walls. Lots of wood. But it is a ways out on the edge of the west side of town. The road gets dark before you get to [...]

  • 7 Club | 7号酒吧

7 is a local. You only have to go once and everybody will remember your name. Cheap beers, as well as not-so-cheap imported bottled beer, an across the board half-price Happy Hour from opening, 5.30 or so, to 8.30 means that you’ll be there after work for a couple and before long will have forgotten your dinner, forgotten the time, and how to get home.

  • You To Bar | You to 酒吧

You To is a landmark, or at least the owner Qise Wole (Lao Yan) is. He has been running bars in Hangzhou since Marco Polo times, the first one was Pontiac on Nanshan Road. Yes, his was pretty much the only bar there then. You To is the drinking place of Shuguang Road, and it [...]

  • Shangri-la Garden Bar

The Shangri-la Garden Bar probably isnt going to be a destination for the evening unless you are staying in the Shang, or tucked into dinner at one of their restaurants, Peppino’s or the Coffee Garden, but if you are ever after a quiet good cocktail with a bit of live background jazz, you cant go [...]

  • JZ Bar

But if you want something that isnt tasteless mainstream, you have to look a little harder. Right at the top of your research list will be JZ. It is certainly one of the most sophisticated places in Hangzhou. Well decorated in a darkened modern way and with huge velvet curtain backed stage showing off a Yamaha Grand. A long wine … …all add to the impression that you might possibly have teleported out of China when you walked in.
